Long Island's housing grew in waves. Large parts of Nassau and western Suffolk were built in the two decades after World War II, with Cape Cods, ranches and split-levels that often have a single-car attached garage or a detached garage at the end of a driveway. Many of those original doors and openers have been replaced at least once. Farther east and along the North Shore, older estates and carriage houses have wood doors in custom sizes, and newer subdivisions have wide double doors.
Nearly every community is within a few miles of salt water, so corrosion is a constant. Along the South Shore bays and barrier islands, and on the East End, coastal winds add another load. Technicians here replace a lot of rusted cables and bottom brackets, and they regularly install doors with wind-load ratings.

Storm season on Long Island
Long Island sits in the path of nor'easters every winter and, now and then, tropical storms and hurricanes in late summer and fall. A garage door is the largest opening in most houses, and when wind pushes one in, the pressure inside the house can lift the roof. That is why newer doors near the coast are built to wind-load ratings, and why older doors are sometimes fitted with bracing kits.
Storms also bring power outages. A battery-backup opener, or knowing how to use the emergency release, keeps cars from being trapped. After any big storm, look the door over before running it: a bowed, crooked or pushed-in door should not be opened until it has been checked.
Licensing: ask for the county license number
Both Long Island counties license home improvement contractors, and garage door installation and repair generally falls under that. In Nassau County the license is issued by the Office of Consumer Affairs; in Suffolk County, by the Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs. A licensed company should give you its number without hesitation, and you can check it with the county.
Permits are local
Long Island has two counties, thirteen towns, two cities and dozens of incorporated villages, and building permits are issued by the town, city or village, not the county. Whether a new garage door needs a permit depends on where you live and the type of work. Like-for-like repairs usually do not; new doors, new openings and coastal wind-rated installations sometimes do. Each town page on this site names the building department that covers most addresses there.

Questions
Long Island: questions
Do you cover all of Long Island?
Calls are taken from about 120 communities across Nassau and Suffolk. The county pages list every one. If yours is not listed, call anyway and the team will tell you whether it can help.
Do you cover the Hamptons and the North Fork?
Coverage in Suffolk is strongest in the western and central towns. Call with your ZIP code and the company will confirm whether it can reach you and when.
Is a garage door company required to be licensed on Long Island?
Generally, yes. Nassau and Suffolk both require home improvement contractors to hold a county license, and that typically includes garage door installers.
Are garage doors on Long Island required to be wind rated?
New doors must meet the wind-load requirements of the New York residential code for the location, and those are higher near the coast. A like-for-like repair to an existing door is different. The installer, or your town or village building department, can tell you what applies.
Can I get same-day service on Long Island?
Often, especially in Nassau and western Suffolk, where local companies are close by. The company that answers will tell you when it can arrive before anything is booked.
What garage door problems are most common on Long Island?
Broken springs, rusted or snapped cables, worn openers and torn bottom seals. Near the coast, salt air speeds up rust on every metal part, and storms add wind and water damage.
Do I need a permit to replace a garage door on Long Island?
It depends on your town, city or village, and on the work. Like-for-like repairs usually do not; new doors, new openings and wind-rated coastal installations sometimes do. Each town page names the building department for most addresses.
Why does salt air matter even if I live inland?
Few places on Long Island are more than a few miles from salt water, and winter road salt reaches every garage on wet tires. Cables, bottom brackets and springs rust faster here than in many inland areas.
Should I replace my opener and springs at the same time?
Only if both need it. Springs and openers wear on different schedules. If the opener is more than 12 to 15 years old and the springs are being replaced anyway, doing both in one visit can save a second service call.
