The Carpet City
For decades, carpet and rug mills such as Mohawk Carpet and Bigelow-Sanford made Amsterdam an industrial center on the Mohawk River. The neighborhoods that housed mill workers climb the hills on both sides of the river, with closely built homes and detached garages often added in the 1920s through 1950s. Fort Johnson, a small village just west, is named for Sir William Johnson's 1749 stone house.
Steep streets and old garages make for tight working conditions: low headroom, uneven floors and doors that have been patched over the years.
Common calls
- New lightweight doors for old garages
- Low-headroom openers
- Thresholds and seals on uneven floors
- Winter freeze problems
Permits and paperwork in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a city in Montgomery County, on the Mohawk River. Building permits for most addresses come from the City of Amsterdam code enforcement; Fort Johnson and the Town of Amsterdam have their own. A like-for-like repair, such as new springs or an opener, does not usually need a permit. A new door, a widened opening or a wind-rated coastal installation may, and the installer should check before ordering.
Montgomery County does not issue its own home improvement license. New York's General Business Law still applies: home improvement work over $500, which includes a new garage door, must be covered by a written contract that describes the work, the price and the start and finish dates. Ask the company for proof of insurance before a large job.
Mohawk Valley winters and garage doors
Montgomery County follows the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal through the Mohawk Valley, with cold winters, lake-influenced snow on some days and plenty of freeze-thaw cycles. Freeze-thaw is hard on concrete, and a garage floor that has heaved or cracked can leave gaps under the door.
Many homes in Amsterdam, Canajoharie and the canal villages are older, with detached garages and doors that predate modern safety sensors.
